“Efforts Underway to Allow Israeli Fans at Birmingham Europa Match”

The Home Secretary has affirmed that efforts are being made to allow Israeli fans to attend a game in Birmingham next month. The Government is awaiting a plan from West Midlands Police outlining the necessary resources for Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters to participate in a Europa League match against Aston Villa.

Key government officials are engaged in discussions to overturn the ban on Israeli fans attending the game, which was criticized by Keir Starmer as a wrong decision. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all football fans, regardless of their background.

A Government spokesperson reiterated the determination to enable all fans to attend the match without hindrance based on their identity. The decision to classify the match as high risk was influenced by past incidents, including violent clashes and hate crimes during a previous Europa League game in Amsterdam.

Various government officials, including Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and Communities Secretary Steve Reed, are actively working to reverse the decision that prohibits Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending the match in Birmingham. Police and crime commissioner Simon Foster has called for an immediate review of the decision to prioritize the safety of all individuals in the area.

The ban on Israeli fans attending the match has sparked outrage among supporters and officials, with calls for reconsideration due to its negative implications. Aston Villa and Uefa have been informed that no away fans will be allowed to attend the fixture, citing safety considerations as the primary factor.

West Midlands Police highlighted the high-risk classification of the match based on intelligence and past incidents, leading to their support for the fan ban. Independent and Green politicians have backed the decision, advocating for a sporting boycott of Israel in light of ongoing conflicts in the region.
