President Donald Trump has reportedly requested Apple to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps, causing a stir among Canadians amid ongoing trade tensions. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum revealed that Trump contacted Apple directly regarding the name change. It is anticipated that the alteration to “Lake America” could be implemented soon.
Following the signing of an executive order by Trump to rename Lake Ontario, tensions escalated between the U.S. and Canada, leading to the imposition of tariffs on various Canadian goods. In response, Canada announced retaliatory tariffs set to take effect in the near future. Despite these developments, Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly asserted that the lake, situated between Ontario and New York state as one of the Great Lakes, will forever be recognized as Lake Ontario.
Google confirmed that U.S. users of Google Maps would see “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario to align with official government sources. However, Canadian users will continue to see Lake Ontario on Google Maps. Certain Ontario and Canadian websites briefly displayed Lake America but have since reverted to showing Lake Ontario.
Currently, Apple Maps in Canada still identifies the body of water as Lake Ontario, with no immediate response from Apple regarding the potential renaming. Notably, in 2025, Trump issued a similar executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, impacting federal documents and services. Apple Maps currently shows the area as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”
