An explosion in the vicinity of a train station in Augsburg, Germany, prompted a temporary closure of the transport hub on Wednesday morning due to the discovery of a suspicious object. Authorities later confirmed that the object was harmless, leading to the reopening of the station at 10 a.m. Trains resumed normal operations following the incident.
Police spokesperson Timo Küfner stated, “We can confirm that the object found outside the main train station posed no threat, and the station has been reopened.” The explosion, caused by an unidentified object in a passageway near the station around 3:15 a.m., resulted in minor injuries to a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, both Ukrainian citizens.
Following the initial explosion, a second suspicious object was found at the main train station, prompting its closure at 8:30 a.m. Explosives experts from the Bavarian state criminal police office were dispatched to investigate the scene. Küfner mentioned that the motive behind the overnight explosion was still under investigation.
Reports indicated disruptions in road traffic and public transportation near the station during the early morning hours. News outlet Bild suggested that the explosion occurred in front of a jewelry store and not specifically targeted at the train station.
Augsburg, a city in Bavaria with a population of 308,000, is located approximately 78 kilometers northwest of Munich. The incident comes shortly after the German government accused Russia of an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where a drone loaded with explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft. This incident, along with the recent events in Augsburg, raises concerns about potential threats and dangers posed by such activities.
