The first day of practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar event in Canada had to be canceled on Friday due to incomplete track construction, preventing officials from conducting final safety checks. The organizers announced plans to incorporate all missed track sessions from the first day into the busy schedule for Saturday.
This year marks Markham’s debut as the host city after the event was relocated from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, where it had been held since its inception in 1986. J. Douglas Boles, the president of IndyCar, expressed disappointment in a statement, citing the delayed track build despite substantial support from their team on-site. He highlighted the strong spectator turnout as a testament to Ontario’s avid interest in the sport.
Local fans Mark Coburn from Kitchener and Scott Stobo from Waterloo, who have been attending the race for two decades, shared mixed feelings about the postponement of practice and qualifying sessions. While acknowledging the importance of ensuring track safety, they expressed a desire for smoother event management to maintain fan engagement and excitement.
The move of the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham last September. The newly constructed temporary circuit spans Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Incomplete features such as a pedestrian bridge over Enterprise Boulevard and safety fencing ports for marshals were among the outstanding elements.
Financial support for the event included a $1.5 million investment from the Ontario government in July and a subsequent $3.5 million contribution from the federal government. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti confirmed substantial capital spending exceeding $12 million for the race, primarily focused on infrastructure upgrades.
Friday’s activities at the IndyCar race in Canada were free for spectators, with donations encouraged for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Despite the warm weather, with temperatures reaching 26°C or 31°C with humidity, fans enjoyed various off-track activities, including driver autograph sessions.
Saturday’s schedule promises an action-packed day at the track, featuring IndyCar’s practice sessions and qualifying round. The event will also host races from the USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series, offering a full weekend of motorsport entertainment.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming races, organizers are optimistic about the circuit’s potential to deliver an exciting show. Boles expressed gratitude to the city of Markham for its support in creating a fast and technically challenging layout that is set to impress spectators on race day.
Despite the challenges faced during the event, fans like Stobo acknowledged the unique experience but hinted that they might not return for future editions.
