Around 100,000 families are being involved in a program for comprehensive genome testing for infants, capable of detecting numerous diseases, some of which might otherwise go unnoticed until significant harm occurs.
This initiative could signal a shift away from the current scenario where families of children with rare illnesses often face long waits, or in some cases, never receive a diagnosis as their child’s condition worsens.
The Health Secretary, a kidney cancer survivor himself, anticipates that the Generation Study will furnish data to implement genome sequencing for all newborns, alongside the existing NHS heel prick test.
