Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, currently at the bottom of the league standings, caused an upset by defeating the Ottawa Rapid, who lead the league, with a 4-3 victory in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the Wild in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton doubling the lead approximately 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the back of the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just before the end of the first half.
Thurton completed her brace just before halftime, setting the stage for the Wild’s victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, whose current record stands at two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, seeing their 10-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
Despite holding 54% possession, the Rapid were outshot by the Wild 16-13 (with 9 shots on target to 6).
The Wild earned six of the game’s 11 corners, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the score and then netted a decisive goal five minutes into stoppage time in the second half, guiding the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 triumph over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes put the fourth-place Tides ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute.
The Rise, in fifth place, dominated possession with 56% and outshot the Tides 18-13, including 6 shots on target to 4.
Halifax took four of the six corners in the game, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
