The pilot had issued warnings about excessive speed nearly two minutes before the crash and ultimately recommended an aborted landing at the last moment. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) disclosed partial details from the recordings following interviews with both pilots, with the full transcript set for a later release. Notably, one of the pilots did not consistently acknowledge the speed alerts.
The plane approached the runway at a high speed on Sunday afternoon, overshooting the landing point by approximately 400 meters. Subsequently, it collided with a van carrying workers from a plane-cleaning company and a compact SUV on a public road, leading to a fatal outcome for all five occupants of the van. Additionally, five others sustained injuries, with two individuals remaining in critical condition as of Tuesday. Fortunately, the two pilots on board survived the crash.
Reflecting on the situation, former FAA official Mike O’Donnell emphasized that corrective actions could have been taken when the pilot initially flagged the speeding issue. Recommendations included deploying spoilers, reducing throttle, lowering the landing gear, or opting for a go-around maneuver.
