“AI-Created Fake Videos of Sharks in Flooded Jamaica Streets Heighten Anxiety”

Fake videos generated by artificial intelligence falsely depict sharks swimming in the flooded streets of Jamaica, supposedly caused by Hurricane Melissa, a powerful Category 5 storm currently wreaking havoc on the island. This hurricane marks the strongest recorded storm to hit Jamaica in its 174-year history, prompting the government to issue warnings and residents to evacuate, resulting in deserted streets in the capital city of Kingston.

The dissemination of misleading AI-created content, including images of sharks in floodwaters, has added to the anxiety among Jamaican residents. While some of these fabricated videos bear the watermark of OpenAI’s Sora model, others lack clear indications of being inauthentic. Senator Dana Morris Dixon, Jamaica’s information minister, emphasized the importance of relying on official sources for accurate information during press conferences, cautioning against the spread of fake news circulating on social media platforms.

Apart from the shark visuals, there have been various other deceptive clips circulating online, showing exaggerated scenes of flooding and people fleeing from massive waves. Concerns have been raised by meteorology experts, like University of Oklahoma professor Amy McGovern, who warned that the proliferation of fake content could diminish the seriousness of government warnings and potentially lead to loss of life and property.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in southwestern Jamaica near New Hope and is projected to exit through St. Ann parish before heading towards Cuba. Reports of landslides, fallen trees, and widespread power outages have surfaced, with authorities anticipating a slow process of recovery and damage assessment due to the storm’s intensity. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness highlighted the challenges ahead, emphasizing the urgent need for swift recovery efforts in the aftermath of the catastrophic storm.
