A recent report from consumer group Which? has revealed that despite the popularity of major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, they are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to smaller competitors. The report, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, indicated that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.
The study aimed to assess how well providers are meeting customer needs, with results showing that the prominent “Big Four” companies are trailing behind many smaller rivals. Talkmobile emerged as the top performer in the rankings, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY.
Among the major providers, EE secured the highest position, ranking ninth, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks. Price emerged as a significant factor, with the report highlighting that customers on the Big Four networks typically pay around £16 per month for a SIM-only plan, compared to just £9 for users on smaller networks.
Interestingly, the report noted that lower prices on smaller networks do not compromise coverage quality, as many of them utilize the infrastructure of major networks, offering comparable signal strength and service without the premium cost associated with well-known brands. Switching between networks was also highlighted as a simple process, with some customers able to transition in as little as 10 minutes.
One customer cited in the report shared their positive experience of switching from O2 to SMARTY, saving approximately £200 annually after their monthly bill significantly decreased. Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently excel in customer service and affordability compared to industry giants, urging dissatisfied customers or those seeking cost savings to consider switching to more value-oriented providers.
The report also provided a list of mobile network ratings, with Talkmobile leading at 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile at 81%, Giffgaff and SMARTY at 79%, and Voxi at 79%, among others. The findings underscore the competitive edge that smaller providers hold in the mobile network market.
