A woman shared her harrowing experience of being targeted by a stalker who broke into her home and stole her diary, all captured on a Ring doorbell. Grace Hallam, featured in Channel 4’s “Catching My Stalker,” faced fear for her safety as a colleague, Karl Chads, became obsessive and abusive towards her. The unsettling ordeal began when they met on a train ride back from a meeting in Birmingham in May 2023.
Grace, at 32 years old and living in Watford, had limited interaction with Chads, who worked in the company’s London office, as she primarily worked from home. Despite finding Chads peculiar during work calls, she initially perceived him as friendly during their train journey. However, at a work event later that year at The Ritz in London, Chads made inappropriate remarks about food and alcohol, leaving Grace feeling uncomfortable.
Following Chads’ attempts to establish a personal connection by sending messages and making unwelcome advances, Grace reported the situation to the authorities and her manager after feeling threatened. Despite Chads’ subsequent resignation amid company investigations, he continued to harass Grace, prompting her to contact the police daily out of fear for her safety.
The situation escalated when Chads vandalized Grace’s property, causing significant damage and stealing personal belongings. Grace and her boyfriend, Daryl, took precautionary measures, including installing a Ring doorbell. Chads’ aggressive behavior culminated in a threatening call to Daryl and a violent break-in at Grace’s home, resulting in his arrest.
Chads faced multiple charges, including stalking with fear of violence, burglary, criminal damage, and trespassing with intent to commit a sexual offense. After a trial, he was found guilty and sentenced to over eight years in prison, also being placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely. Hertfordshire Constabulary imposed a strict restraining order on Chads, prohibiting him from specific locations and contact with former or current company employees.
In her victim impact statement, Grace expressed the profound impact of Chads’ actions on her life, describing him as ruining her existence. Detective Constable Honeybell emphasized the severity of Chads’ behavior, acknowledging the fear and distress he caused, and highlighting the importance of the legal consequences he faced.
Hertfordshire Police acknowledged shortcomings in their initial response to Grace’s reports and implemented improvements to enhance their handling of stalking cases, emphasizing the importance of training and protective measures for such incidents.
