A massive sinkhole opened up in front of a coastal mansion in Malibu believed to be owned by actor Nicolas Cage, causing the driveway to collapse. The incident led to a gas leak early Tuesday morning, with SoCalGas utility responding to control the leak. The sinkhole, measuring 7.5 to nine meters deep and 18 meters wide, extended into the roadway, prompting an emergency proclamation and evacuation order for 31 properties in the area.
Although representatives for Cage did not respond to requests for comment, property records indicate the mansion was sold in 2024, with the prior owner confirming Cage as the buyer. The property suffered damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area caused by lingering effects of Hurricane Marie, which reverted to a tropical storm. The City of Malibu stated that the incident is part of broader regional coastal conditions and is monitoring erosion at various vulnerable points along the coast.
The mansion is located in a private neighborhood between the ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway. Cage, aged 62, recently starred in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and is set to portray John Madden in an upcoming biographical film about the NFL coach and commentator. With over 100 film appearances, he won an Oscar for his role in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
