Kayla Alexander led the scoring with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Canada’s senior women’s national basketball team kicked off the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament with a 72-57 victory over Senegal in Guadalajara, Mexico. Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb contributed 13 points each to Canada’s winning effort.
Head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of starting the tournament with a win. Fortner commended the team’s toughness and rebounding efforts, especially against a strong Senegalese team known for their prowess on the boards.
Canada dominated the offensive glass, outrebounding Senegal 15-8 in that category. Tara Wallack’s four offensive rebounds played a significant role in creating extra scoring opportunities for the Canadian team.
Swords made an early impact by sinking three three-pointers in the first quarter, helping Canada build a comfortable lead that they maintained throughout the game. Despite a push from Senegal in the third quarter, Canada’s control never wavered.
In key statistical areas, Canada outscored Senegal 26-14 in points in the paint, shooting an efficient 52.5% from that zone. Both teams scored 11 points off turnovers, while Senegal narrowly edged out Canada 31-29 in bench scoring.
The Canadian team will enjoy a day off on Tuesday before their next game against the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
