The Ottawa Redblacks have set a new record for the longest losing streak in the modern era of the CFL. Following their 33-21 defeat against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night, the Redblacks have now lost 15 consecutive games, dating back to the previous season. This surpasses the record held by the Shreveport Pirates, who suffered 14 straight losses in 1994, according to CFL historian Steve Daniel.
Expressing disappointment over this distinction, Redblacks fan Jimmy Fata commented on the team’s struggle to identify the root cause of their ongoing losses. The tradition of cutting a log section (known as a “wood cookie”) for every touchdown at home games has seen a decline in recent times due to the team’s lack of success.
In addition to the modern-day CFL record, the Redblacks’ losing streak now ranks as the third-longest in the entire CFL history dating back to 1907. Another loss in the upcoming game against the Montreal Alouettes would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second spot, who endured 16 consecutive losses between 1948 and 1949.
Daniel highlighted the need for the Redblacks to focus on rebuilding their roster, particularly on the defensive end. Despite recent changes, the team’s struggles in the red zone have been a significant challenge, reflecting their difficulties in converting scoring opportunities.
Amidst these challenges, Fata emphasized the importance of unwavering support for the team through thick and thin, urging fans to stand by their side during this tough period. Despite the setbacks, he remains optimistic about the team’s potential for improvement in the future.
