“Man Targeted in Racist Bagpipe Attack in Halifax”

A man in Halifax recounted being targeted in a racist incident on Saturday afternoon when another individual deliberately hit his car with bagpipes and hurled racial slurs at him. Shalu Shajan, who hails from India, shared his account with CBC News, explaining that the encounter occurred after he parked his car on Lower Water Street near Prince Street in downtown Halifax. The man carrying bagpipes approached Shajan’s car and struck his side mirror with part of the instrument. Instead of leaving, he proceeded to hit the trunk of the car as well, prompting Shajan to confront him. The situation escalated as the man started using racist language, telling Shajan to “go back to your country.” Witness Raven Fox confirmed the verbal altercation, noting the racial undertones in the man’s remarks. The man then walked away towards the waterfront as Shajan considered calling 911, eventually reporting the incident to Halifax Regional Police and their hate crime unit. Subsequently, a report was filed, and the hate crime unit is investigating whether the incident was motivated by hate. Shajan emphasized the need to address such behavior to prevent it from happening to others, expressing his decision to press charges against the perpetrator.
