The recent trial of a man from Saint John who was found guilty of fatally stabbing his two sons last year has left many individuals shocked and seeking answers on how such a tragedy could occur and ways to prevent similar incidents.
Roman Kamyshnyy, aged 46, received two concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole for 25 years following his conviction in June for two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his 10 and 17-year-old sons.
Peter Jaffe, a domestic violence expert and psychologist based in London, Ontario, mentioned that while the idea of a parent harming their own child is unimaginable for most, approximately 30 children in Canada are killed by a parent annually. He highlighted that around half of these child fatalities, referred to as filicides, happen in situations involving intimate partner violence, often as an act of revenge when a woman leaves an abusive relationship.
A study released earlier this year revealed that New Brunswick had the highest number of domestic violence-related homicides in Atlantic Canada between 2012 and 2022. The province also had the highest annual death rate when adjusted for population size. Notably, a significant portion of victims in New Brunswick were the intimate partners of the accused, with a small percentage being children.
Mary Aspinall, an assistant professor and member of the New Brunswick Domestic Violence Death Review Committee, emphasized that in cases where children are killed, they are often used as a means to cause further harm to the other parent, typically the mother.
The Crown in Kamyshnyy’s case argued that the murders were motivated by vengeance, with him using his sons’ lives as a weapon to punish his ex-wife for alleged infidelity. The tragic incident unfolded in January 2025 when the boys were found deceased in their family apartment, with both having sustained multiple stab wounds. Kamyshnyy was also discovered with self-inflicted injuries and a note taking responsibility for the situation.
It was mentioned that prior to the incident, there were allegations of a history of physical intimate partner violence between Kamyshnyy and his ex-wife. Concerns were raised about the economic challenges and housing shortages that can exacerbate risks in such situations.
Experts stressed the importance of recognizing warning signs and risk factors associated with domestic violence to prevent similar tragedies. They called for increased awareness, education, and support networks to address these issues effectively and protect vulnerable individuals.
Efforts are being made to enhance training for frontline professionals to identify risks early on and update assessment tools to evaluate the risk of harm towards children. Legislative reforms criminalizing coercive control in intimate relationships are seen as a positive step towards addressing abusive behavior patterns.
Despite the challenges, experts remain hopeful that with a concerted effort, commitment, and proper funding, domestic homicides can be reduced in the future. They underscore the need for practical actions to implement existing recommendations and safeguard individuals from harm.
