Virgin Media has recently slashed the price of its fastest broadband offering to a new all-time low. The company has introduced a surprise promotion that has reduced the cost of its ultra-fast Gig1 Fibre Broadband by over £70.
The Gig1 plan boasts speeds of up to 1,130Mbps and typically retails at £29.99 per month. However, customers can now avail of this service for just £26.99 per month, resulting in a total saving of £72 over the 24-month contract period, which translates to approximately 87p per day.
This discounted rate is being touted by Virgin as the “lowest ever price” for its Gig1 plan. With such high speeds, users can download a feature-length HD movie in under 30 seconds and have a 50GB PS5 game ready to play in less than seven minutes.
Although the offer seems attractive, it comes with a caveat. Virgin has disclosed that the discounted rate of £26.99 will see two price increases during the minimum term, climbing to £30.99 from April 2027 and further rising to £34.99 from April 2028. Additionally, the 1,130Mbps speeds may not be available in all UK households, so it is advisable to check for service availability using Virgin’s postcode checker.
In comparison with competitors such as Sky, Virgin’s £26.99 Gig1 deal appears to be a compelling choice. While Sky has reduced its 900Mbps plan to £28, it remains pricier than Virgin and offers slower speeds. Moreover, BT offers its 900Mbps connection at a higher price of £37.99, prompting consumers to explore alternative network providers that may offer competitive rates.
For instance, Community Fibre is presently providing 1Gbps speeds at £25 per month, with the first three months free and fixed prices throughout the contract period. However, this provider is limited to serving London and select locations in the south-east.
When selecting a broadband plan, it is crucial to consider individual needs. For instance, a couple streaming Netflix in the evenings may suffice with speeds around 100Mbps, while larger households engaging in remote work, downloading content, and online gaming should opt for speeds of at least 300Mbps. A higher broadband speed ensures smoother performance, much like having a direct motorway connection to your living space rather than a narrow road.
By selecting Virgin’s 1Gbps fibre offering, customers can experience a high-speed internet connection that facilitates seamless online activities.
