A former police officer from New Jersey, Rebecca Sayegh, 32, has confessed to breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s residence and causing chaos during a domestic incident in April. Berkeley Township Police Department officers were alerted to the disturbance at 11:20pm on April 25.
Sayegh utilized her baton to force her way through the front door and confronted her ex-partner and his new companion. The off-duty officer, who previously lived with her ex for five years, engaged in a heated argument with the couple, resulting in physical altercations.
Although the victims attempted to restrain Sayegh, she managed to break free and proceeded to vandalize the property, including damaging the victim’s vehicle, as per prosecutors.
Sayegh’s rampage continued as the new girlfriend sought refuge in the backyard and alerted the authorities. Upon police arrival, Sayegh resisted arrest and engaged in further confrontation before being subdued. The ex-officer caused approximately $2,000 in damages to the house and $500 to the vehicle.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Sayegh forcibly entered the residence by breaking the front glass door and also damaged a vehicle parked in the driveway. Despite her resistance, she was eventually apprehended and released following the bail reform in New Jersey.
As part of her admission of guilt to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Sayegh forfeited her position at the Toms River Township Police Department and any potential future public employment in New Jersey.
Scheduled for sentencing on January 26 next year, Sayegh entered a guilty plea subsequent to filing a lawsuit against the department and township, alleging gender-based discrimination and harassment by her superiors.
