The United Nations took a significant step on Friday by voting to move away from the outdated Mercator global map, which distorts the true size of countries. This resolution, initiated by African nations led by Togo, aims to address the misperception that Africa is marginalized. The Mercator map exaggerates land masses closer to the poles, making Greenland appear comparable in size to Africa, despite Africa being significantly larger.
Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey emphasized the importance of a fair representation of the world, stating, “A fair world begins with a fair map.” The resolution advocates for the Equal Earth projection, which provides a more accurate depiction of continent sizes.
Although the resolution is not legally binding, it does not challenge the Mercator projection’s suitability for maritime and aerial navigation. The UN General Assembly passed the resolution with a majority vote of 164 to one, with six abstentions. The United States, the sole dissenting voter, criticized the resolution for pushing an “ideological agenda” instead of focusing on international peace and prosperity.
Togo plans to update its school geography materials by the end of the year, becoming the first country to do so. Dussey expressed Togo’s intention to set an example for other nations by transitioning away from the Mercator map. He emphasized the need for governments, schools, international bodies, and technology firms to embrace the Equal Earth projection for a more accurate global perspective.
In the coming months, Togo aims to collaborate with African Union members and global allies to encourage wider adoption of the Equal Earth projection. Dussey underscored that this initiative aligns with broader efforts in Africa to address colonial legacies, emphasizing that it is not an attack on any specific civilization. The campaign reflects a changing world where Africa seeks accurate representation and recognition.
