A spokesperson from 10 Downing Street stated this afternoon that upon reviewing the communications of the Chancellor’s husband, new details have emerged. This information has been forwarded to the Prime Minister and his independent adviser.
Despite this revelation, Downing Street affirmed that the Prime Minister continues to have confidence in the Chancellor and assured that Reeves will present the Budget on November 26. This endorsement came after Labour Party leader Keir Starmer expressed support for Reeves on Wednesday night following her apology for not obtaining a necessary license to rent out their family property.
Reeves informed the Prime Minister that she and her family were unaware of the requirement for a “selective license” in their Southwark area in London, where they rented out their residence for £3,200 per month after relocating to No 11. Southwark Council mandates obtaining a license in advance for renting out properties in specific areas.
Addressing the issue, Reeves stated, “We were unaware of the licensing requirement, and therefore did not acquire the license before renting out the property. This was an inadvertent error. Once brought to my attention, we promptly acted and applied for the license. I sincerely apologize for this mistake and am open to answering any queries.”
In his response, Starmer indicated his satisfaction that the issue could be resolved after consulting with his ethics adviser. He stated, “I have consulted with my Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards this evening. Following your prompt actions to rectify the situation, including your apology, he advised me that further investigation is unnecessary.”
The Prime Minister added, “It is unfortunate that the appropriate license was not sought earlier, and it is commendable that you have addressed this promptly today. Your handling of this matter reflects the urgency and seriousness it merits.”
