Samsung has recently introduced its latest lineup of innovative foldable phones, potentially posing a challenge for Apple.
The tech giant from Korea has unveiled three new devices, with the spotlight on the fresh Galaxy Z Fold 8 model that boasts a completely reimagined appearance.
Diverging from past Fold models featuring a tall cover screen and square main panel, Samsung has embraced a shorter and wider “passport-style” design. While it may seem unconventional when closed, unfolding the device reveals a new shape that is intuitive.
Equipped with a spacious 7.6-inch display, the device resembles a compact tablet more than a traditional smartphone, offering an ideal platform for activities such as streaming movies, watching series, and gaming on the move.
This launch holds particular significance as Apple is anticipated to introduce its inaugural foldable iPhone later this year, with speculations pointing towards a similar radical design choice. If these rumors materialize, Samsung has already taken a lead over its primary competitor.
Beyond design, Samsung is also advancing in other aspects with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 being the thinnest and lightest Fold model yet, weighing only 180g. It features an enhanced hinge mechanism for increased durability, reducing the risk of long-term damage.
When unfolded, the expanded display incorporates Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating to enhance visibility under bright sunlight.
Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, supported by a 4,800mAh battery capable of rapid charging to 63% in just half an hour.
The device sports a dual-camera system for satisfactory photography results, fortified with Gorilla Glass for protection against scratches and inadvertent impacts.
Moreover, Samsung has integrated its latest Galaxy AI tools, offering enhanced photo editing capabilities, productivity features, and improved search functionalities.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is available for pre-order starting at £1,699. In contrast, Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone is slated for a later release and might come with a price tag exceeding £2,000.
Alongside the Fold 8, Samsung has also introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling last year’s Fold 7 in appearance but featuring upgraded components. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a notable camera enhancement, boasting a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera for improved low-light photography and 8K video recording.
The Fold 8 Ultra has adopted a new Flex Titanium hinge and refined display structure for increased strength and a more polished look, reducing the crease and enhancing the unfolding process.
With a larger 5,000mAh battery offering extended usage, the device can charge up to 67% in approximately 30 minutes.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at £1,899.
Completing the trio is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, maintaining Samsung’s popular clamshell design but becoming even thinner and lighter.
Enhancements include an improved external cover display, a sturdier aluminum hinge, enhanced performance, and upgraded camera functionalities.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is priced starting from £1,149.
