I recently came back from providing essential assistance to emergency responders and labor union members in the Donbas area of Ukraine. Despite facing daily challenges such as power outages, missile attacks, and civilian casualties, the Ukrainian people exhibit remarkable resilience. They desire peace but refuse to surrender their nation to Russian control and the harsh realities of occupation.
During my visit to the Save Ukraine center, I encountered children rescued from the occupied regions, some of whom had experienced sexual abuse. Shockingly, over 20,000 children have been reported as abducted by Russia, indicating a widespread issue of child exploitation.
The situation is further compounded by the actions of sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, who is impeding the transfer of £2.5 billion from the Chelsea FC sale for Ukraine aid while engaging in a legal battle over frozen assets in Jersey, with the support of a member of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet, Lord Wolfson KC. This alliance raises concerns about the normalization of relationships with Russian oligarchs.
Amidst these circumstances, it is crucial to recognize the broader geopolitical implications and the need for accountability. Urgent measures are required, including emergency legislation to prevent sanctioned individuals from manipulating the UK legal system and redirecting the approximately £30 billion in frozen Russian assets in the UK towards assisting Ukraine.
