Racing Community Mourns Loss of Rising Star Jockey

The horse racing community is grieving the loss of Tommie Jakes, a 19-year-old apprentice jockey who tragically passed away. The Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Professional Jockeys Association issued a joint statement expressing deep sorrow over the death of Tommie Jakes, a licensed apprentice jockey, who died at his residence near Newmarket.

Described as a beloved son, brother, and valued member of George Boughey’s racing team, Tommie Jakes had recently ridden at Nottingham and was scheduled to ride for trainer Ismail Mohammed at Chelmsford. With an impressive track record of 59 wins from 519 appearances since 2023, Jakes had shown promise as a rising star in the racing industry.

Coming from a family with a racing background, Jakes had a successful career, including notable wins with trainers like Jane Chapple-Hyam, Linda Perratt, and Alice Haynes. His talents and dedication had earned him praise from trainers and peers alike.

Brant Dunshea, the British Horseracing Authority’s acting chief executive, expressed devastation over Jakes’ passing, highlighting his skill and potential as a young rider. The racing community, including friends, colleagues, and supporters, mourned the loss and offered condolences to Jakes’ family and loved ones.

Support services are being provided by the racing community to those affected by Tommie Jakes’ passing. Tributes and moments of silence will be observed at upcoming race meetings to honor his memory. The IJF and PJA have made available helplines for jockeys in need of support during this difficult time.
