Promising Apprentice Jockey Tommie Jakes Dies at 19

The horse racing community is in mourning following the tragic death of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes at the young age of 19. The Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Professional Jockeys Association issued a joint statement expressing deep sadness over the passing of Tommie Jakes, who died at his home near Newmarket.

Described as a cherished son, brother, and a valued member of George Boughey’s racing team, Tommie Jakes had recently ridden in a race at Nottingham and was scheduled to ride for trainer Ismail Mohammed at Chelmsford. With 59 wins to his name from 519 appearances since 2023, Jakes was considered one of the most promising young talents in the racing community.

Having started his career following in his father’s footsteps, who was also involved in racing, Jakes had notable successes in his relatively short career. The British Horseracing Authority’s acting chief executive Brant Dunshea expressed devastation over the loss, highlighting Jakes’ talent and the impact he had made in the industry.

Expressions of grief and support poured in from various quarters, including the George Boughey yard, where Jakes was a beloved member. The community will pay tribute to Jakes at upcoming race meetings, while support services are being made available to help those affected by his passing.

For assistance, individuals can reach out to the jockey’s helpline, Racing Welfare, and Samaritans for support during this difficult time.
