Calls for Apology: Justice Secretary Criticized by Legal Professionals

Robert Jenrick, the Justice Secretary, is being called upon to issue an apology for his criticisms of judges, as stated by the Justice Secretary himself. David Lammy spoke out against the backdrop of concerns within the legal profession regarding the escalation of threats, including death and rape, attributed to a hostile environment fueled by Conservative criticisms.

Jenrick has spearheaded a campaign to expose what he characterizes as “activist” judges, vowing to dismiss 35 of them and alleging that a pervasive corruption has infiltrated segments of the judiciary. He has further advocated for the dismantling of the Sentencing Council, the Judicial Appointments Commission, and immigration tribunals.

In response to inquiries from The Mirror during an event with OpenAI, the Deputy Prime Minister urged Jenrick to offer an apology. Emphasizing the significance of upholding the judiciary’s independence, Lammy stressed the necessity for Jenrick, in aspiring to become Lord Chancellor, to retract his inflammatory language that is unsettling judges in their professional duties.

The Bar Council of England and Wales, along with other legal bodies representing a total of 250,000 lawyers, expressed profound apprehension over the disparaging rhetoric directed at legal professionals. Earlier in the month, Jenrick drew criticism for asserting that over 30 immigration judges have affiliations with “open borders charities,” a claim denounced by refugee support organizations Freedom from Torture and Care4Calais.
