In fresh data released today, it has been revealed that the area with the highest level of poverty in England is located in Clacton, the constituency represented by Nigel Farage. Specifically, a neighborhood in Jaywick, Clacton-on-Sea, has been identified as having the highest deprivation score among over 33,750 small local areas nationwide, according to official statistics.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government assessed deprivation scores for each area by analyzing factors such as income, employment, education, health, crime, housing, and the local environment. These scores are calculated for small neighborhoods known as LSOAs, each with around 1,500 residents.
The latest Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) data, updated for the first time since 2019, reflects the impact of the Covid pandemic on local communities. Deprivation rates are separately calculated for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with the current data focusing on England only.
In a controversial move, the Reform UK party, led by Nigel Farage, recently announced plans to eliminate the personal independence payment (PIP) for individuals with anxiety disorders deemed as non-serious. This decision, unveiled at a London press conference, is part of a broader initiative to overhaul the benefits system, potentially saving £9 billion annually by 2029.
The area with the lowest deprivation score in Clacton, known as Tendring 018A, consists mainly of detached bungalows in the Brooklands Estate. Notably, this area had previously been identified as the most deprived part of the country in the 2019 rankings.
Nigel Farage, who secured his first parliamentary seat in Clacton in the last General Election with 46% of the vote, has faced scrutiny for his additional earnings exceeding £1 million since becoming an MP. The top five most deprived areas in the country are all located in Blackpool, with various neighborhoods in the region showcasing high IMD scores.
Conversely, the least deprived areas in England are clustered in St Albans, with certain parts of Harpenden standing out for their low deprivation levels. The IMD scores serve as a crucial tool for pinpointing disadvantaged communities and poverty-stricken regions across the country.
