“Early Sugar Limitation Boosts Heart Health Long-Term”

A recent study suggests that reducing sugar intake during the first two years of life can lead to long-term benefits for heart health. Researchers found that individuals who had limited sugar consumption in early childhood, especially if their mothers also had low sugar intake during pregnancy, were less likely to develop heart-related conditions such as heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes.

The study, which was published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), analyzed data from the period of sugar rationing in the UK during World War II. Data from 63,433 individuals from the UK Biobank, born between October 1951 and March 1956 without a history of heart disease, was examined. The study included 40,063 individuals who experienced sugar rationing and 23,370 who did not.

Health records were reviewed for instances of heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, stroke, and deaths related to these conditions. Those who had restricted sugar intake during pregnancy and the first two years of life had a significantly lower risk of heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and cardiovascular death compared to those who were not exposed to rationing.

The researchers observed a correlation between longer exposure to sugar rationing and decreasing heart risks, attributed in part to lower blood pressure and reduced diabetes. Individuals who experienced rationing also had a longer period without heart issues compared to those who did not.

During the rationing period, everyone, including pregnant women and children, had their sugar allowance limited to less than 40g per day, with no added sugars provided to babies under two years old. The research team from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the School of Medicine in Boston, USA, emphasized the critical importance of the first 1,000 days after conception in shaping lifelong cardiometabolic risk. They highlighted that early-life sugar restriction was associated with decreased risks of heart attack, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality.
