Labour Health Minister Shares Inspiring Cancer Journey

MP Ashley Dalton, leading Labour’s national cancer strategy as a health minister at the Department for Health and Social Care, has revealed her personal journey with incurable metastatic breast cancer. Diagnosed before the last general election, Dalton is now sharing her story during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to inspire and educate others.

In a heartfelt video on the DHSC’s platform, Dalton recalled her initial diagnosis of primary breast cancer in late 2013. She described the emotional impact of the news and the overwhelming uncertainty about the future. Dalton shared a poignant moment with her daughter, who brought a sense of unity and support by invoking “Avengers Assemble” as a family rallying cry in the face of cancer.

Encouraging open discussions about cancer, Dalton emphasized the importance of awareness and early detection. She highlighted the need for people to familiarize themselves with cancer symptoms, screening programs, and treatment options to combat ignorance around the disease.

Having undergone a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormone therapy after her first diagnosis, Dalton experienced a recurrence just before the general election, leading to the discovery of metastasized breast cancer cells in her abdomen. Despite the incurable nature of her current condition, she continues to work while undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool.

Dalton aims to challenge stereotypes about cancer patients, emphasizing that her battle is ongoing and defying expectations of a more critical state. She remains committed to her responsibilities but acknowledges the necessity of adapting her pace to accommodate her health needs.
