“£10M Security Boost for UK Mosques Amid Rising Hate Crimes”

Keir Starmer has unveiled additional security funding for mosques following his visit to a mosque that was targeted in a suspected arson incident earlier this month.

The government has announced a £10 million allocation to support mosques and Muslim faith centers in safeguarding against hate crimes and attacks. This funding injection will assist in implementing security enhancements such as CCTV systems, alarm installations, secure fencing, and security personnel.

The announcement coincided with Keir Starmer’s visit to Peacehaven mosque in East Sussex, where he expressed his appreciation for the community. The mosque suffered damage to its front entrance and a vehicle on October 4, with no reported injuries. Sussex Police confirmed the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life in connection with the incident.

Mr. Starmer emphasized the importance of protecting all communities in the UK, stating that attacks on any group undermine the nation’s values. He highlighted the significance of the funding in ensuring the safety and peace of Muslim communities.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also condemned the attack on the Peacehaven Mosque, emphasizing the right to practice faith without fear or hatred. She called for unity against those who aim to sow division through violence and intimidation.

Akeela Ahmed, CEO of the British Muslim Trust, welcomed the funding as a means to uphold the fundamental British values of freedom of religious belief and practice. She expressed concern over the rising fear and intimidation faced by Muslim communities due to incidents of vandalism, arson, and abuse targeting mosques and worshippers.
