Caring grandparents Larry and Deborah Dutton, who adopted their granddaughter Heidi in Dewey, Oklahoma, provided her with a loving and secure environment. Larry, a retired US Air Force master staff sergeant, and Deborah, a former Air Force member turned chef, were well-respected in their community for their kindness and generous nature.
Heidi, aged 17, had been dating Lucas Walker, 20, for a few months, and he frequently visited their rural farmhouse. Prior to meeting Walker online, Heidi was a typical teenager, but her behavior changed as she became more isolated and influenced by her older boyfriend.
Concern arose in January 2023 when family and neighbors realized they hadn’t seen Larry and Deborah since before the Christmas period. Multiple requests were made for a welfare check by the police due to suspicions of something amiss.
Upon visiting the property on January 19, authorities detected a foul odor of decomposing flesh and strong scents of bleach and cleaning products. A search warrant was obtained, leading to the discovery of a potential crime scene inside the home where Dutton and Walker were present.
During the search, evidence of attempted cleanup was found, including bloodstains under the floorboards in the couple’s bedroom. Further investigation revealed bloodied clothing and jewelry, as well as traces of blood on the walls that had been partially wiped clean. A disturbed patch of dirt in the backyard led to the grim discovery of Deborah and Larry’s bodies in a shallow grave.
Dutton and Walker were arrested at the scene and later confessed to the murders, revealing a planned and violent attack on the elderly couple. Walker’s account detailed a horrific sequence of events where he shot Deborah and then fatally stabbed her, before attacking Larry, who succumbed to his injuries despite attempting to reach his wife.
The couple then attempted to cover up the crime, dragging the bodies outside and burying them in the backyard. Further incriminating evidence came to light, including footage from Larry’s phone showing the perpetrators moving a covered body on December 22.
Walker pled guilty to second-degree murder and received a 35-year prison sentence, while Dutton, charged with first-degree murder and other offenses, was sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility after serving 85% of a 45-year term. The district attorney emphasized the heinous nature of the crime and the need for accountability, acknowledging the devastating betrayal of trust by Heidi towards her grandparents who had provided her with love and care.
