An elderly woman, identified as Suzanne Rees, was discovered deceased on an isolated island after being inadvertently left behind by a cruise ship. The 80-year-old tourist went missing during an excursion on Lizard Island in Queensland, Australia. She was only noticed as absent when she did not show up for dinner, approximately five hours after she disappeared.
Family members of Ms. Rees have criticized Coral Expeditions, operated by the National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) in Australia, for what they deem as a lack of proper care and judgment. The incident occurred during the initial stop of the Coral Adventurer’s 60-day voyage around Australia, a luxury trip costing around £40,000 per individual. An investigation involving multiple agencies will delve into the circumstances surrounding Ms. Rees’ separation from the cruise, including claims that a passenger count was not conducted before departure.
Ms. Rees’ body was found approximately 50 meters off a hiking trail leading to Cook’s Look, the highest point on Lizard Island. The Coral Adventurer had departed Cairns for the journey just two days prior. The vessel had anchored near Lizard Island to allow passengers to participate in activities like hiking and snorkeling before departing on Sunday afternoon.
Upon receiving the report of Ms. Rees’ disappearance, a search operation, involving aerial reconnaissance by helicopter, was initiated around Lizard Island. The cruise ship is said to have returned to the island, with crew members joining in the search efforts. Coral Expeditions’ CEO, Mark Fifield, confirmed the tragic discovery, expressing regret over the incident and pledging full support to the bereaved family.
Authorities, including the police, are involved in investigating the incident, which is currently being treated as a sudden and non-suspicious death.
