Brian David Steckel, a convicted rapist and murderer, was able to communicate clearly and coherently for a period of time following the administration of lethal injection.
Despite receiving a lethal cocktail of drugs, Steckel, a 36-year-old American who had been found guilty of raping and killing Sandra Lee Long, spoke calmly to his family and witnesses in his final moments.
Witnesses at the execution reported hearing mechanical sounds from the injection apparatus and observed signs of discomfort, suggesting the effectiveness of the drugs may have been compromised.
Officials in Delaware, however, asserted that the execution proceeded as planned, explaining the extended duration was to accommodate Steckel’s final statements.
In his closing remarks, Steckel expressed regret and readiness for his punishment, stating, “I walked in here without a fight, and I accept my punishment. It is time to go. I love you people… I’m at peace.”
Steckel had been convicted of the brutal rape and murder of Sandra Lee Long in 1994 in Wilmington, Delaware.
In a horrific incident, Steckel tricked Long into her apartment under false pretenses and then assaulted her when she resisted his advances, leading to her tragic death from smoke inhalation and severe burns.
Following the heinous crime, Steckel continued his disturbing behavior by taunting authorities and identifying himself as the “Driftwood Killer” in menacing communications.
After being apprehended while intoxicated on an outstanding warrant, Steckel confessed to the murder the next day, leading to his conviction for multiple counts of first-degree murder and a death sentence.
During his trial, Steckel acknowledged his wrongdoing and appealed to the jury for accountability, admitting, “I know what I did was wrong: it was selfish [and] despicable.”
