British Woman Found Dead in Florida; Suspect Denies Charges

A British woman, Sonia Exelby, aged 32 and hailing from Portsmouth, Hampshire, was tragically discovered deceased in a shallow grave in Marion Oaks, Florida. This followed her failure to board her return flight on October 13. Authorities have alleged that Sonia was sexually abused, tortured, and murdered by Dwain Hall, a 53-year-old resident of Florida. Her family has disclosed her struggles with mental health issues. The autopsy results indicated that Sonia succumbed to four stab wounds.

The investigation linked Sonia and Hall through transactions made on Sonia’s credit cards. Hall was apprehended on November 17 and is facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, credit card fraud, and unlawful use of a communication device, all of which he denies.

Prior to her tragic demise, Sonia had shared on Facebook about her improved health and positive mindset. It was later revealed that Sonia had connected with Hall on a fetish website, where they discussed her desire for a violent end.

Friends of Sonia raised concerns over her vulnerable state and mental health struggles, urging for help as she embarked on a journey to the US. Investigators uncovered distressing messages indicating Sonia’s distress and her desperate attempts to escape a dire situation. Hall, who exhibited violent tendencies, claimed Sonia had promised money to him, leading to a series of tragic events.

During his court appearance, Hall was informed that due to the substantial evidence against him, no bond could guarantee his appearance in court or the safety of the community. Florida police commissioner Mark Glass praised the swift and resolute efforts of law enforcement in ensuring justice for Sonia.

The Foreign Office has extended its support to Sonia’s family and is actively cooperating with authorities in Florida in the ongoing investigation. For those in need of emotional support, the Samaritans helpline is available 24/7 at 116 123, or via email and website contact options.
