“Daily Nut Consumption Linked to 17% Lower Dementia Risk”

Eating a daily serving of unsalted nuts, such as almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, and walnuts, may reduce the risk of developing dementia by 17%, according to gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi. Dr. Sethi, a medical professional with qualifications from prestigious institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the University of Texas School of Public Health, Harvard, and Stanford, shared this insight in an Instagram video.

Nuts are known for their nutrient-rich composition, containing antioxidants, unsaturated fatty acids, and fiber that are beneficial for brain and gut health. Dr. Sethi recommended consuming a 30g portion of mixed nuts daily to reap these benefits, emphasizing that even eating a single type of nut can provide similar advantages.

Variety can be added to one’s diet by mixing different types of nuts, which are easily available in major supermarkets like Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons. Budget-conscious shoppers can find affordable mixed nut options at Aldi for £1.75, providing a convenient and cost-effective way to incorporate nuts into their daily routine.

While nuts offer health benefits, it is essential to maintain a balanced diet and lifestyle to fully experience their advantages. Nuts alone are not a cure-all and should be part of an overall healthy eating plan. Dr. Sethi personally follows this advice by enjoying a handful of mixed nuts during lunchtime.

The term ‘all-cause dementia’ encompasses various conditions that lead to mental deterioration due to brain damage. In the UK, an estimated 944,000 to 982,000 people currently live with all-cause dementia, a number expected to surpass one million by 2030 and reach 1.4 million by 2040. Globally, 55 million individuals are affected by dementia, a figure projected to rise to 139 million by 2050.

Recent research suggests that consuming nuts daily as part of a balanced diet may help reduce the risk of dementia. Nuts are believed to protect brain health due to their rich content of antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and other essential nutrients. Walnuts, in particular, containing the plant-based omega-3 fatty acid ALA, are thought to support cognitive health.
