“World’s Longest Name Takes 20 Minutes to Say”

The individual holding the record for the world’s longest name revealed that it requires a substantial 20 minutes to verbally articulate his complete moniker – an occurrence he has encountered only once in his life.

Preferring simplicity, Laurence commonly goes by his first and last names – Laurence Watkins – despite the astonishing 2,308 additional names nestled in between. In 1990, at the age of 60, he opted to officially alter his name after finding inspiration in the Guinness Book of World Records, aspiring to secure his personal title.

During that period, while employed as a delivery driver for a library, he leveraged the abundance of books around him to handpick his numerous fresh identities. His dedication paid off, leading to the acknowledgment of his name as the longest in the world.

However, the distinctive name comes with its challenges. Laurence, now retired and residing in Sydney, Australia, expressed, “Possessing such an extensive name can sometimes present obstacles as it lacks recognition.” He shared that his passport contains a note stating, “Refer to pages for list of forenames,” with six attached pages.

Recalling his wedding day, Laurence, originally from Auckland, New Zealand, recalled how the marriage celebrant took 20 minutes to voice his complete name, emphasizing that the initial 2,309 names represent his “first” names alongside a modest single-name surname of Watkins.

Drawing from library resources, he selected various names, encompassing both traditional local titles and more distinctive ones. He disclosed, “Being surrounded by countless books provided the ideal setting to discover my new name. While some are challenging for me to pronounce accurately, my top two favorites are Kalwhakamatautau and AZ2000 – symbolizing a range from A to Z and over 2,000 names. Each name holds personal significance for me.”

Despite holding a world record, Laurence expressed disappointment in the subdued reactions he often receives when divulging his extensive name. He remarked, “The response I receive when revealing my 2,000-plus names is somewhat lackluster, as I notice a lack of shared enthusiasm. While I shouldn’t expect others to match my excitement, it remains somewhat disheartening.”

Initially credited with 2,310 names, Laurence’s record was later adjusted to 2,253 following revisions to the record criteria, yet his full name remains 2,310 individual names long. He is set to receive an updated certificate in the near future.
