A man in the United States is facing allegations of torturing and killing a vulnerable British woman who reportedly traveled abroad with the intention of experiencing a violent death. Sonia Exelby, a 32-year-old from Portsmouth, was declared missing when she did not board her return flight on October 13.
Authorities arrested Dwain Hall, 53, on suspicion of murder and kidnapping charges, which he denies, after discovering her body in a shallow grave in Florida on October 17. According to court records, their encounter was arranged after engaging in conversations in an online fetish chatroom two years prior. Allegedly, Sonia had suicidal tendencies and traveled to the U.S. with the expectation of being subjected to sexual abuse, torture, and murder. Hall, who confessed to having violent inclinations, stated that Sonia expressed suicidal thoughts and a desire to be killed.
The investigation revealed a video where Sonia exhibited signs of physical abuse. She mentioned in the footage her desire to be stabbed and expressed feelings of self-loathing. Detectives noted her distress, indicating her change of heart about the situation but her inability to escape. Messages sent by Sonia to a friend on October 11 revealed her fear and desperation for help.
An autopsy later confirmed that Sonia died from four stab wounds. Hall, a U.S. car mechanic, may potentially face the death penalty if found guilty. Concerns were raised by a friend from the U.K. about Sonia’s vulnerable state and mental health struggles when she embarked on her journey.
Hall is accused of using Sonia’s credit cards after her death. During questioning, he implied that Sonia got what she wanted and insinuated that she was content. Investigators recovered physical evidence linking Hall to the crime, including a blade with Sonia’s blood and a shovel with traces of her DNA. The case is under judicial scrutiny, with Hall facing serious criminal charges and the possibility of the death penalty if convicted.
