“British Tourists Trapped in Jamaica as Category 5 Hurricane Melissa Approaches”

A group of around 200 British citizens is currently confined to a hotel in Jamaica due to the imminent threat of Hurricane Melissa, a dangerous Category 5 storm approaching the Caribbean island. Melissa, classified at the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson scale with sustained winds exceeding 157mph, poses a severe risk of heavy rainfall and destructive winds for Jamaica.

Having already devastated neighboring islands like the Dominican Republic and Haiti, resulting in at least six fatalities and displacing thousands, Melissa is anticipated to impact Jamaica with even more potent winds than previously witnessed. British holidaymaker Andrew Tracey, stranded in Jamaica after flight cancellations, expressed his concerns about the situation, highlighting the anxiety among hotel guests as they brace for the storm’s arrival.

According to Evan Thompson, the principal director of Jamaica’s meteorological service, Melissa could be the most powerful hurricane to hit Jamaica in decades. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared a state of emergency for the entire island, activating preparations under the Disaster Risk Management Act. Shelters are open, emergency response teams are on standby, and significant resources have been allocated to mitigate the storm’s impact.

The Foreign Office issued a warning about the impending landfall of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica, predicting extreme weather conditions with up to 700mm of rainfall, storm surges up to 4 meters, and winds reaching 135mph. The government has closed international airports as a safety measure. The hurricane was named Melissa as per the naming conventions of the US National Hurricane Center and the World Meteorological Organization, with names only retired in cases of extreme devastation.
