“NATO Responds: Warplanes Scrambled Over Russian Airspace Breach”

NATO has once again deployed warplanes following the breach of European airspace by Russian jets. The military alliance responded to the incursion by dispatching two Spanish Eurofighter planes, as Russian military aircraft violated Lithuania’s airspace from the Kaliningrad region for a brief 18-second period. In a swift reaction, Spanish jets from NATO’s Baltic Air Police patrolled the area, with Lithuania’s president condemning Russia’s actions as a “blatant breach of international law.”

President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized the significance of reinforcing European air defense readiness, denouncing the intrusion as a violation of Lithuania’s territorial integrity and international law. The Lithuanian defense ministry reassured the public of the country’s preparedness, stating that every part of Lithuania is guarded and protected.

This recent airspace violation is part of a series of provocations by Russia, triggering concerns in both eastern and western Europe and prompting calls for enhanced security measures. Previously, Russian MiG-31 fighter jets encroached on Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island for approximately 12 minutes, leading to strong responses from Tallinn and NATO, labeling the flights as “reckless.” Subsequently, Italian F-35 jets were deployed through the Baltic Air Policing mission in response to the incident.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal urged a united and robust response from NATO to counter provocations, emphasizing the need for collaboration among allies to ensure shared situational awareness and determine future actions. Earlier the same month, Poland intercepted several Russian drones that infiltrated its airspace following an attack on Ukraine. Additionally, a drone breached Romanian airspace shortly after a similar assault in Ukraine.

Lithuania’s military speculated that the recent violation occurred during a training exercise involving the Russian Su-30 jet over the Kaliningrad Oblast, an enclave bordering Lithuania and Poland.
