EE mobile customers are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Bitdefender cybersecurity experts have noted that EE users are receiving urgent messages claiming they are at risk of losing a substantial amount of EE reward points unless they take immediate action.
According to Bitdefender, scammers are posing as EE to entice individuals into clicking on deceptive links that lead to fraudulent websites aiming to steal login credentials for monetary gain. The success of this scam relies on creating a sense of urgency to prompt users to act impulsively.
Bitdefender highlighted the tactic employed by scammers, emphasizing that legitimate EE alerts will only be found within official EE accounts and not in unsolicited texts. Users are advised to treat any messages urging quick action as suspicious and should report such texts to 7726 before deleting them.
This type of scam has previously targeted EE customers, with instances of convincing fake messages circulating earlier this year. EE has clarified that it does not operate a points program and has shared examples of scam messages to raise awareness among users.
EE’s advice to customers includes refraining from clicking on unknown links in text messages, not responding to suspicious messages, avoiding calling the provided numbers, and refraining from sharing personal or financial information. It is crucial for EE users to remain vigilant and cautious when dealing with such messages.
