Survivor Recounts Bear Attack: “Crushed Skull, Miraculous Escape”

A man who survived a bear attack vividly recounted the terrifying moments before the animal crushed his skull, causing him to lose consciousness. Dan Bigley narrowly escaped death when a brown bear dragged him into bushes and repeatedly bit his head, fracturing his skull but miraculously avoiding penetrating his brain.

Although left blind from the attack, Dan shared the detailed account of the life-altering experience nearly two decades later, recalling the chilling noise he heard just before fearing his demise. While residing in Alaska for an extended period, Dan, along with his friend Jana, encountered the bear while walking through the forest post a day of fishing.

Coastal Alaska, known for hosting the world’s largest brown bears towering over 9 feet and weighing up to 1,500 pounds, is home to these swift and agile creatures capable of outpacing humans at speeds of 35 to 40mph in short distances. Despite Dan’s previous encounters with bears in the wild, he sensed the heightened agitation and aggression of this particular bear, forcing them to retreat before the bear attacked him.

Unbeknownst to them, the bear’s cubs were nearby, leading to the defensive attack. Dan’s attempts to escape by jumping into the bushes were thwarted as the bear mauled him, resulting in him hearing his own pained cries before losing consciousness. The bear eventually left, assuming Dan was deceased, and it took the effort of Jana and local fishermen to care for him until emergency services arrived to transport him to the hospital.

Dan suffered severe injuries, with several vital arteries severed during the attack, initially deemed incompatible with survival by doctors. Following a lengthy surgery and a medically-induced coma, Dan embarked on a challenging recovery journey, haunted by the traumatic incident that altered his life.

Reflecting on the ordeal in a subsequent interview, Dan expressed the lasting impact on his mental well-being, describing the haunting memories that persisted in his daily life. Despite the profound trauma, Dan now resides in Anchorage, Alaska, with his family and has authored a book chronicling his experience and journey of recovery post the life-altering bear attack.

Through sharing his story and rewriting his book, Dan found solace and closure, attributing his ability to move beyond the trauma to personal growth, therapy, and the expansion of his fulfilling life. His message emphasizes resilience and the ability to overcome adversity, encapsulating the essence of his transformative journey post the bear attack.
