Tragic Loss: Irish Mare She’s Quality Dies at Breeders’ Cup

Irish sprinter She’s Quality has passed away in a hospital following a pelvic fracture sustained during the Breeders’ Cup event in Del Mar, California. The four-year-old mare, known for her success under trainer Jack Davison from Dunboyne, Co Meath, had achieved notable results, including four second-place finishes in Group competitions in 2025, accumulating earnings exceeding £250,000.

She was considered a contender in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint but her participation was cut short as she quickly fell behind the rest of the field. Jockey Colin Keane decided to halt the race on the backstretch as She’s Quality struggled, prompting immediate attention from veterinarians.

Veterinarian Dr. Scott Hay, who was on-site for the Breeders’ Cup, noted the jockey’s concerns during the race and the decision to stop her for evaluation. She displayed right hind lameness, prompting her transfer to a hospital for further assessment by veterinary experts.

Tragically, within 24 hours of the incident, trainer Davison confirmed the mare’s passing due to the pelvic fracture sustained during the race. Despite initial stable conditions after the event at San Luis Rey Equine Hospital, her health deteriorated overnight, leading to the difficult but humane decision to euthanize her.

Davison expressed deep sorrow over the loss of She’s Quality, emphasizing her exceptional talent and the bond shared with his team over the years. The Breeders’ Cup organization also conveyed their condolences, acknowledging the impact of her passing on the equestrian community.
