Authorities have released a statement regarding the untimely passing of young apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes. The talented rider tragically passed away shortly after his final race at Nottingham Racecourse on Wednesday.
Numerous tributes have poured in for Jakes, who achieved 59 victories in just three seasons of competing on the Flat.
A minute of silence was observed at Chelmsford, where the 19-year-old was scheduled to ride two horses trained by Ismail Mohammed.
In an announcement, Suffolk Police stated: “Police received a report from the ambulance service at 5.45 am this morning regarding the sudden death of a man in Freckenham.
“The death is not considered suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”
Jockeys at various racecourses have been wearing black armbands in honor of Jakes, who participated in 519 races.
Renowned jockey Paul Mulrennan, who rode alongside the teenager on Wednesday, shared his sentiments: “He was a delightful young man. I was alongside him at Nottingham yesterday, had a good chat with him at the races. He seemed cheerful, always polite and in good spirits.
“It’s a very sad situation, and my heart goes out to his family and friends. There is a somber atmosphere in the weighing room tonight.”
Reflecting on the situation at Chelmsford, Hector Crouch commented: “It’s a difficult evening for everyone. It’s more about getting through the meeting rather than looking ahead to anything. Everyone is deeply affected.”
Jakes was employed by George Boughey based in Newmarket, and he clinched his final victory aboard Fouroneohfever, a horse trained by Boughey, at Catterick earlier this month.
“He was not only an immensely talented young rider with a promising future, but also an exceptionally kind, popular, and hard-working individual,” expressed Boughey in his tribute.
Linda Perratt, another staunch supporter of Jakes, expressed how the news had deeply impacted her team.
“TomTom, as we fondly called him, regularly rode for us and secured victories with 17 of our horses,” she wrote. “More importantly, we had the privilege to witness his transformation from a shy, reserved boy to a confident, fun-loving young man who eagerly engaged in our morning discussions and banter.
“We cherished his stays with us, in his Scottish home, and cheered him on whenever he raced. The racing community lost a remarkable talent today. We lost a dear friend.
“Jeremy, Tonie, and the family lost a son and a brother. Our thoughts, prayers, and best wishes are with them during this tragic period.”
Jakes, who resided near Newmarket, is being fondly remembered by industry professionals and race enthusiasts attending the town’s event today.
“The feelings of shock and sorrow here at the racecourse and throughout the town are tangible,” shared Racing TV presenter Lydia Hislop.
“Words cannot fully express this moment, so we will pay our respects and remember Tommy with a moment of silence here as we convey our thoughts and prayers for him, his family, and friends.”
