The appearance of Webster, a large white shark off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, is being viewed as a positive sign of the ocean’s recovery, as reported by a research organization monitoring shark movements in the Atlantic Ocean.
Ocearch founder Chris Fischer noted that multiple great white sharks have been observed in the waters near Newfoundland in recent times. Webster, a 12-foot shark weighing over 1,000 pounds, has been exploring the northern peninsula of Newfoundland this summer, frequently spotted near the beaches in the Cow Head region.
Fischer emphasized that the return of white sharks to familiar locations and seal gathering spots each season indicates a consistent food source for them in those areas. Additionally, other great white sharks named Dold and Monomoy have also been documented and tracked around Newfoundland in past years.
While some may find the presence of great white sharks intimidating, Fischer reassured that it signifies a positive ecological development. He mentioned that the global population of great white sharks drastically declined from the 1970s to the 1990s, with only about nine percent remaining before conservation efforts were implemented to safeguard the remaining population.
The presence of sharks in the region is seen as beneficial for local fisheries, as sharks naturally regulate seal populations, thereby indirectly protecting fish stocks. Fischer highlighted the importance of sharks in maintaining the marine ecosystem and ensuring its health and stability.
Caroline Miri, a marine biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the critical role sharks play in balancing marine ecosystems and controlling invasive and competing species.
Ocearch has tagged approximately 115 sharks across the Atlantic region, from Florida to Newfoundland and Labrador. Webster, initially tagged in September 2025 in Nova Scotia, was last tracked on August 7 off Cow Head.
Fischer addressed concerns about encounters with sharks like Webster, stating that as long as safety precautions are taken, there is no need to fear. He advised individuals to enjoy the water responsibly and be cautious.
Overall, the increasing shark sightings in Newfoundland are indicative of a recovering ocean ecosystem, and efforts to protect and conserve these vital marine predators are yielding positive results.
