Jonathan Arkle, the president of the Apple Race Series Society, expressed disappointment over the cancellation of the Triathlon National Championships scheduled to take place in Kelowna on August 9 due to concerns about the health risks posed by heavy smoke in the region. Environment Canada issued an air quality alert for the south and central Interior of BC, warning about the potential health hazards of high smoke levels.
Similarly, the Fat Dog 120 trail race, set to commence on August 7, was also canceled a week before over 1,000 participants were expected to gather at Manning Park in the Cascade Mountains. Race director Erik Bird cited safety concerns amidst ongoing wildfires crossing over from Washington state as the reason for the cancellation. Registrants will receive a 50% race credit refund, but the financial implications of the cancellation are still being assessed.
In response to the wildfire conditions in the Okanagan region, the Bush Babes Trail Running organization has secured event cancellation insurance for its upcoming races, ensuring full refunds for registrants in case of event cancellations.
Cassandra Zerebeski, the president of Tourism Kelowna, noted that despite event cancellations and smoke, tourists are still visiting the area, although with increased caution. The organization is addressing concerns from tourists regarding air quality and providing information on indoor recreational activities to counter the negative impact of wildfires on tourism.
While some events have been canceled, such as a concert series in Vernon and a swim in Penticton, the Kamloops Rib Festival is proceeding as planned, with chefs adapting to the smoky conditions. The dragon boat races alongside the festival, however, were canceled due to health risks.
