“Pensioner’s Struggle: Working at 82 to Make Ends Meet”

Roger Cliffe-Thompson, an 82-year-old pensioner from Merseyside, dedicates his weekdays to assisting individuals with dementia at a care facility. Despite finding great fulfillment in his role as an activities co-ordinator, he admits that he continues working out of financial necessity.

Formerly a teacher in further education, Mr. Cliffe-Thompson reveals that relying solely on his state pension and a modest private pension is insufficient to cover his expenses, including ongoing payments on an interest-only mortgage that extends until he reaches 99 years old. Managing his finances becomes even more challenging due to soaring household bills, notably exemplified by a substantial increase in his car insurance premium upon turning 80.

In a bid to economize, Mr. Cliffe-Thompson vigilantly monitors his utility usage, implementing cost-saving measures like reusing bathwater to flush the toilet. He strives to limit his daily energy expenditure to £1.80, although extreme weather conditions occasionally push this figure higher. Expressing the difficulties faced by many older individuals, he highlights the necessity for internet proficiency to secure better deals and manage everyday transactions efficiently.

Research conducted by Age UK highlights the financial struggles endured by a significant portion of the elderly population, with many resorting to drastic measures like reducing electricity consumption and forgoing meals to make ends meet. As part of their “Crisis Hiding in Plain Sight” initiative, Age UK urges pensioners to explore potential avenues for financial assistance, such as pension credit, to alleviate economic hardships.

Caroline Abrahams, the charity director at Age UK, emphasizes the urgency of addressing poverty among older adults, underscoring the critical role of financial support programs in enhancing their quality of life. With the aim of assisting more pensioners in accessing essential benefits, Age UK encourages early applications and advocates for increased awareness of available support mechanisms within the elderly community.
