The daughter of a woman who tragically passed away on a tropical island following a cruise ship’s departure without her has expressed her deep sorrow.
Suzanne Rees, aged 80, was found deceased on Lizard Island, where she and other passengers had disembarked from the Coral Adventurer during a 60-day luxury cruise. Despite being a solo traveler, Ms. Rees was left behind as the vessel set sail for its next destination. Hours later, she was discovered lifeless in a remote area after a search operation.
Reports indicate that Ms. Rees had been on a hike on the island, during which she fell and sustained severe injuries on a Saturday. An investigation is now in progress to determine the circumstances surrounding her failure to reboard the ship, including allegations that a passenger count was not conducted before departure.
Katherine Rees, the daughter of Ms. Rees, has endorsed the inquiry, accusing the cruise company Coral Expeditions of neglecting their duty. Speaking from Sydney, Australia, Katherine stated, “We are devastated by the fact that the Coral Adventurer left Lizard Island without my mom after an organized excursion.”
Katherine added, “From what little information we have received, it appears there was a lack of care and common sense. According to the police, it was a scorching day, and my mom felt unwell during the hill climb. She was instructed to descend alone. Subsequently, the ship departed without conducting a passenger count. At some point during this sequence, or shortly after, my mom passed away, alone.”
She expressed hope that a coroner’s investigation would reveal what actions the company could have taken to prevent her mother’s death. Ms. Rees was reported missing only when she failed to appear for dinner at a restaurant onboard.
The following day, a search helicopter crew spotted Ms. Rees’ body approximately 50 meters off the hiking trail to the lookout, according to The Australian newspaper. She seemed to have fallen from a cliff or slope.
Authorities mentioned in a statement that a coroner would look into the “non-suspicious death.” The coroner’s court confirmed that the incident was under investigation. Coral Expeditions CEO Mark Fifield stated that the company is fully cooperating with the official inquiries. He refrained from commenting further until these investigations are concluded.
In a statement, the cruise company expressed its condolences to the Rees family and acknowledged the unfortunate situation. They assured ongoing support to the family during this challenging period.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority, a safety regulator, is examining why Ms. Rees may not have been properly documented during boarding at Lizard Island. Furthermore, a workplace safety agency is also investigating this tragic incident.
