“UK Tightens Visa Rules: English Proficiency Required at A-level Standard”

Migrants seeking employment in the UK will now be required to demonstrate English proficiency at an A-level standard, as per a new regulation implemented today. Individuals applying through specific legal pathways must exhibit proficiency equivalent to A-level standards in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

To meet this requirement, applicants will need to undergo a Secure English Language Test administered by a provider approved by the Home Office. The test results will play a crucial role in the visa application process verification.

This adjustment is part of a broader initiative to enhance visa regulations outlined in the Immigration White Paper by the Labour Party. Additionally, the time allotted for international students to secure a graduate-level job after completing their studies will be reduced from two years to 18 months starting from January 2027.

Furthermore, the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC), paid by employers sponsoring skilled foreign workers, will see an increase from £364 to £480 per individual per year for small or charitable organizations, and from £1,000 to £1,320 for medium and large organizations. The funds generated from this escalation will be reinvested in training the local workforce in the UK.

This ISC adjustment, the first since 2017, aims to bolster investments in British employees and decrease dependency on overseas recruitment, according to the Home Office. The formal process to raise the charge will commence later this week.

Moreover, students wishing to come to the UK will face higher financial thresholds, with the requirement raised to £1,171 per month outside London (previously £1,136) for a maximum of nine months.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the importance of migrants learning the English language to actively contribute to the UK’s societal fabric. Effective from January 8, 2026, the English language prerequisite for Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual (HPI), and Scale-up visa routes will be elevated from B1 to B2 level. Comparable language criteria for other routes, including dependents, will be introduced progressively, as stated by the Home Office.

The HPI route, designed for graduates from top 100 international universities, will be expanded to attract highly skilled individuals to the UK, aligning with government strategies to enhance workforce diversity.
