“Death Row Last Meal Tradition Ended Due to Inmate’s Outrageous Order”

Death row inmates have traditionally been granted the privilege of selecting their final meal before their scheduled execution. However, this practice was abruptly terminated by prison authorities following an extraordinary and contentious request made by one notorious convict.

Lawrence Russell Brewer, aged 44, was put to death on September 21, 2011, for the murder of James Byrd Jr. Brewer, who had expressed no remorse for his actions, caused a stir with his behavior leading up to his execution.

Despite the customary allowance for a final meal request, Brewer made history with his extravagant order, including a triple-meat bacon cheeseburger, a meat-lover’s pizza, a cheese omelette with beef and vegetables, three fajitas, two chicken-fried steaks with gravy and onions, a large bowl of okra with ketchup, a pound of barbecue meat, half a loaf of bread, peanut butter fudge with crushed peanuts, a pint of ice cream, and three root beers.

Interestingly, Brewer refused to consume any of the prepared food, claiming he had lost his appetite. His actions post-order were so extreme that Texas prison officials promptly suspended the practice of last meal requests for other inmates, opting to serve standard prison meals even for the final meal.

This decision was swiftly implemented after Brewer’s execution, with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice confirming the changes shortly thereafter. Senator John Whitmire criticized the tradition, stating that it was inappropriate to grant such a privilege to individuals sentenced to death, emphasizing that victims were not afforded the same consideration.

The alteration to the last meal policy occurred twenty years after James Edward Smith’s peculiar request for a “lump of dirt” was denied by prison authorities. The revised regulations on final meals in Texas have sparked ongoing public debate, with some speculating that Brewer’s excessive order was intended to provoke prison staff rather than for genuine consumption.
