Steve Smith to Captain Australia in Ashes Opener

Australia’s cricket team will start the upcoming Ashes series without their captain, Pat Cummins, due to a persisting back injury. The 32-year-old’s absence has been confirmed for the first test match against England, with Steve Smith set to step in as the replacement captain.

Despite concerns that Cummins might miss the entire series, the injury is not severe but will sideline him for the opening test in Perth next month. Australia’s coach, Andrew McDonald, expressed optimism for Cummins’ return by the second test, highlighting that the bowler is making progress in his recovery.

Smith, who was once stripped of the captaincy due to his involvement in the 2018 sandpaper scandal, will lead the team in Cummins’ absence. McDonald praised Smith’s experience and leadership qualities, emphasizing the duo’s effective partnership on the field.

In Cummins’ place, paceman Scott Boland has been earmarked to join the bowling lineup alongside Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc for the initial test match. McDonald expressed confidence in Boland’s abilities and anticipated Cummins’ return to boost the team’s performance.

The Ashes series will extend until early January, with the final test scheduled in Sydney on January 3. Australia will closely monitor Cummins’ recovery for his potential comeback in the subsequent matches. Brendan McCullum has already announced his squad preparations for the first test, setting the stage for an exciting cricketing season ahead.
