Authorities have apprehended a man who was found residing with his deceased mother in a residence he claimed to have not left for a minimum of eight years.
Law enforcement detained the 43-year-old individual in his dwelling, which he shared with his mother. The discovery was made when officers found the elderly woman, identified as Antonia, lifeless in her bed. The son, known locally as Javier S, confessed to the police that he had sealed his mother’s bedroom door with insulating tape to conceal the odor emanating from her decomposing body.
The son disclosed that he sustained himself on a diet of biscuits, rice, and chickpeas, which his mother had purchased before her demise, for the past month.
This disturbing incident unfolded in their residence in Majorca, Spain. Neighbors in the Palma district of Santa Catalina mentioned that they had not seen Javier leave the premises for approximately 13 years.
According to reports, Javier claimed that he had not ventured outside for eight years, relying entirely on his mother for household tasks and grocery shopping.
The police were alerted by a neighbor who had not seen Antonia for several weeks. Subsequent investigations indicated a potential violent cause of death based on a preliminary post-mortem examination.
Javier, maintaining his innocence regarding his mother’s death, appeared in court in Palma and was released on bail pending further inquiry and the completion of the full autopsy report.
While no formal charges have been filed against the son, he is under investigation for suspicion of involvement in a “crime against life.”
As part of his bail conditions, Javier is required to report to the court every two weeks. However, there are concerns about his compliance, considering his prolonged self-isolation within the apartment.
A neighbor, speaking to a local publication, stated, “I have not seen Javier leave the apartment for about 13 years. He was entirely reliant on his mother, who was physically active and took care of all their needs, to the extent that he never ventured out, even for shopping. She was mentally sound and had no difficulty climbing the stairs to their home.”
In a closed-door court session, Javier admitted that he had not left the apartment complex for eight years and had subsisted on the remaining food after his mother’s passing, asserting her death was from natural causes. Nevertheless, bloodstains were allegedly found in a bathroom, claimed by Javier to be his, prompting a homicide investigation by local authorities.
The National Police in Majorca released a statement detailing the discovery and subsequent arrest, emphasizing the ongoing investigation to uncover all details surrounding the tragic event, pending the final autopsy report.
