Sky has recently announced a significant change that marks a shift in the future of TV viewing and potentially spells the decline of traditional satellite dishes. The company has revealed that it is discontinuing the sale of its Sky Q set-top box on its website and is now promoting Sky Stream or Sky Glass TVs as alternatives.
In a statement, Sky stated, “We’ve unplugged Sky Q. Plug in Sky Stream for less. Sky Q is no longer available to buy online.” Customers attempting to purchase Sky Q will be directed towards the more affordable Stream box, with Sky offering, “You can take your viewing to the next level with Sky Stream starting from £15 a month.”
The decision to focus on Sky Stream and Sky Glass is driven by their delivery of live and on-demand content through internet connectivity rather than relying on traditional satellite signals. These options are quicker to set up, do not necessitate engineer visits or wall drilling, and receive frequent updates and new features from Sky. Opting for a basic Sky Stream package is also notably cheaper than Sky Q, starting at just £15 a month.
The transition away from Sky Q has been anticipated, as the company has observed a trend where most new customers prefer streaming-based services. Despite this change, existing users of Sky Q will not be affected, as the update only impacts new online orders. Sky Q can still be purchased by contacting Sky directly or visiting retail stores.
Sky emphasized, “Sky Q is no longer available for online purchase, but customers can contact us to order Sky Q or visit our retail outlets. Alternatively, they can choose from our popular streaming options, Sky Glass and Sky Stream, preferred by 9 out of 10 new customers.”
While Sky Q remains a staple in many households, the push towards a streaming-centric future is clearly gaining momentum.
