“O2 Urges Users to Upgrade for 3G Shutdown”

O2 network users with older phones are urged to upgrade promptly as O2, now a part of Virgin Media, will be shutting down its 3G signal later this year, aligning with EE and Vodafone’s similar moves. Remaining on 3G-only devices will result in losing access to online services like WhatsApp once 3G is phased out entirely. O2 has notified customers to switch to 4G or 5G capable devices to continue using data services, although calls and texts will still be functional on outdated devices. Virgin Media O2’s Chief Technology Officer emphasized the transition to faster 4G and 5G networks, rendering 3G outdated.

The phasing out of 3G is a response to its inability to keep up with modern demands, as it provides slower web speeds compared to 5G. Discontinuing 3G will free up bandwidth for more efficient 4G and 5G services. The diminishing use of the 3G network, accounting for less than 2% of mobile data traffic, prompted the industry and government to reallocate mobile spectrum for enhanced 4G and 5G experiences. This shift will deliver faster data speeds, improved streaming reliability, and higher-quality voice calls to customers.

O2 assures that the impact of this change will be minimal, with notifications sent to users of 3G-only devices to upgrade. The network’s gradual withdrawal of 3G in various locations will culminate soon, urging users to upgrade promptly to avoid disruptions in mobile data services.
